Information on Utah Valley University athletics department, NCAA and NAIA recruiting, sports scholarships, scores, NJCAA player stats, and rankings. For college-bound students, applying to college has many steps, and for student-athletes who plan on playing college sports there are additional factors to take into consideration, such as time-management, strength building, and weight-loss. Not all recruiting is done like NCAA Division I football and basketball. NAIA college coaches have less rules on when they are allowed to talk with recruits, and NJCAA scouts may show up at your high school games without any notice. It's practically impossible for college coaches to watch every player who has expressed interest in their program, so if you get the chance, make a memorable first impression by visiting the campus in person. Use your summer break to increase speed, and build muscle mass. It's important to keep coaching staff updated that you are training hard throughout the off-season.

Intercollegiate athletics program information follows, where available. Some student-athletes are wise to delay college entrance by a year. An extra year in high school or prep school can allow players to mature mentally, bring grades and SAT test scores up, put on weight and gain strength. Most college and university team rankings, along with the latest scores, can be found below. You may be able to compete either at intercollegiate levels for competitive sports, or simply play intramural sports to make new friends.

Althletic Scholarship Information

Utah Valley University athletics departmentYou don't have to quarterback the university football team to a state championship to earn an athletic scholarship. Most major sports that are able to field a team in intercollegiate competition have sports scholarships available. From women's gymnastics to men's track and field, coaches are seeking players to build a team around. That leadership role often is accompanied by a full-scholarship. The best time to begin searching for scholarships is before your senior year, in order to meet deadlines. Schools confirm that it is important to file financial aid forms such as the CSS Profile early in the school year.

There are several scholarship databases available online. With more than 1.5 million scholarships worth more than $3.4 billion, the FastWeb.com scholarship search is the largest, most accurate and most frequently updated sports scholarship database. Average players often ask whether there are any sports scholarships available for them. Indeed there are, though you'll have to show a pattern of improvement, and be ready to sacrifice yourself for the team. Take stock of your athletic abilities as you mature through high-school. Information about the number and amount of scholarships can be found in the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS), conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics.

Team Practices

So, you've been recruited, or made it past a walk-on tryout. That's when the real challenge starts. You still have to make it through daily practices, and several rounds of cuts. A college team practice is far more physical than high school, because the players are so much better. Returning players are put through their paces, run drills, lift weights, and do the running that comes with being on the team. Freshman and walk-ons, on the other hand, are special targets for the coaching staff, looking to test their ability. They are forced to run sprints and do agility drills, to see who's ready to quit before the game even starts.

Some players quit sports because they can't make the grade academically, after heavy lifting, running and long practices. Away games only add to the time commitment of being a student-athlete. Others quit because they are sick of getting their butts whipped on a daily basis. What you're left with after the dust settles, is the real team. Those are the folks you lift with, and often live with as well. To succeed in practice, and actually make the team, here are some rules to follow. Sure, you knew most of these, but do you actually do them?

Keep your eyes on the ball. Sacrifice your body if you must, but don't drop the ball. Watch the ball all the way into your hands, and get a good initial grip. Your sixth sense needs to be developed to stay aware of other players at the same time. Your coach determines whether you get in the game or not, and how much playing time you get. Work hard in practice, and listen to your coach.

Online Courses - MOOCs

The best college for a student is not necessarily the highest ranking in the Forbes' listings, but the college that offers a student the most career opportunities. Pursue your career interests, not high-paying starting salaries, and your overall job earnings will reflect the enthusiasm that you bring to your work, increasing over time as you gain business experience. If you focus your prospective degree choice on salary alone, there is the risk that you may suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending college, and you might end up earning a lot of money as a highly-skilled, technical consultant, or by starting your own small business. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, and offer a variety of learning platforms, utilizing cloud-based software and Google apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree earned on campus. Udemy online learning, a site which allows anyone to build (or take) online courses, is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Khan Academy now offers over 3,900 micro-lectures available via YouTube. Coursera, another online-learning software platform, has millions of enrolled students around the world. Through MIT Open Courseware online classes, educators can improve development of their curricula, making their instruction more effective.
